Leaked Audio Footage Embroils Petro In Scandal

COLOMBIA
  • Semana Magazine has released leaked audio footage where Armando Benedetti, former ambassador to Venezuela and who was campaign manager for President Gustavo Petro, speaks. Benedetti mentions, among other things, money that went into the campaign. This occurs after Petro announced that his chief of staff Laura Sarabia and Benedetti were stepping down, amid a widening investigation into allegations of wiretapping and abuse of power.
  • Petro took to Twitter to say that “money from people linked to drug trafficking wasn’t received in the campaign, much less have figures such as 15 billion (pesos) been handled outside of our accounting.” Benedetti for his part pointed out that the audios were manipulated.
  • The president has indicated that an intelligence agency has illegally taped his conversations during the campaign and said “they could never publish even a minute in which I said something illegal or irregular”.
  • It is worth noting the President’s popularity has fallen, evidenced late last week by an Invamer poll showing Petro’s approval has plunged to 34%, from 50% in November.
