Lebanon Set for Maritime Border Discussions with Syria This Week

Lebanon’s deputy speaker of parliament, Elias Bou Saab is set to visit Syria on Wednesday to discuss delineating their maritime border.

  • The dispute flared up last year when Syria granted an offshore exploration license to a Russian energy company in an area Lebanon claim is theirs.
  • Lebanon has recently agreed a border deal with its other neighbour Israel after a long running dispute. It is currently being legally ratified.
  • Eastern Mediterranean maritime borders have been thrown into focus in recent years because of numerous gas discoveries. The region is being eyed as an aera of gas supply for Europe as it transitions away from Russian flows.
