Li Talks Down Decoupling In Paris Global Financing Speech

CHINA-EU

(MNI) London-Speaking at the Summit for a New Financing Pact in the French capital, Paris, Chinese Premier Li Qiang speaks on financing support for developing nations, but also broader China-Europe economic links. Says that "We need to improve the global financial safety net and step up global coordination on financing." Li: "We need to complete the new round of quotas and reforms agreed by the G20 to give more of a say to developing countries."

  • Li: "China is against and global decoupling or severing of supply chains."
  • Li: "China and Europe should rise above differences and seek common ground and push for more creative solutions."
  • The comments talking down the prospect of a decoupling of China from Western nations with regards to trade and supply chains, as well as those supportive of closer Sino-European cooperation come as part of Li's first foreign trip that started in Germany earlier this week.
  • Li's comments on supporting G20 reforms come as non-US aligned nations have been seeking to boost the role of the G20 as the premier global talking shop, ahead of the G7, seen by some as a US-led bloc. Speaking to European Council President Charles Michel on 22 June, SCMP reportsthat "Li also said both sides had “adhered to strategic autonomy” – suggesting they had kept their distance from Washington."
