Likud-Coalition Partners Agree To Include Opposition Parties Gov't

ISRAEL

As has historically been the case during periods of war and conflict, PM Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party states that all parties within the governing coalition have agreed to seek to expand the gov't to include opposition parties. This follows talksbetween Likud and the centrist National Unity alliance of former Alternate PM Benny Gantz.

  • Times of Israel: "National Unity has said it wants a small war cabinet to be set up with representation from its party and “real influence” for its cabinet members over the management of the war in order to join the government."
  • The report also claims that National Unity are calling for the Knesset to refuse to pass legislation that is not related to the war during the conflict, likely referring to the controversial judicial reforms that have seen mass protests across the country throughout 2023.
  • There are reports that the main opposition liberal Yesh Atid of former PM Yair Lapid is not in line to join a national gov't, having said it would not work alongside the far-right Religious Zionist Party of Fin Min Bezalel Smotrich and Otzma Yehudit of Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.
