UK DATA: Lockdown Leads To Slump in Footfall
---------------------------------------------------------------
- Mar BRC-Shoppertrak Footfall -44.7% Y/Y (FEB -2.0%)
- Footfall Fell 17.7% pre lockdown and plunged 83.2% after Mar 23
----------------------------------------------------------------
Unsurprisingly, footfall in the UK declined by 44.7% y/y in Mar as a result of
the mandatory lockdown across the country. This follows a subdued reading in
Feb, where footfall fell by 2.0%. Before Mar 23 footfall decreased by 17.7%,
while in the two weeks thereafter footfall plummeted by 83.2% on the year.
Shopping centres saw the largest falls with a decline of 43.6%, while high
streets fared slightly better with footfall declining 41.8%. Retail parks saw a
decrease of 23.5% y/y due to the higher proportion of supermarkets which
remained open. The sharp decline in footfall due to social distancing measures
suggests a substantial fall in retail sales in Mar due on Apr 23.
