Low Liquidity Contributes to Price Swings

NATURAL GAS

Volatility in European TTF gas prices has not been helped by low liquidity with front month expiry today.

  • Open interest has been near 1.1m since May down from nearly 2m for much of 2021.
  • Front month traded volume so far today is only 5k and was just 15k yesterday compared to about 35k for most of August.
  • The extreme price rally was driven by supply fears due to the upcoming Nord Stream outage. The correction has been triggered by EU aims to take urgent steps over the coming days and weeks to bring down soaring energy prices.
  • TTF SEP 22 down -7% at 253.5€/MWh
  • TTF WIN 22 down -10.6% at 262.39€/MWh
  • TTF SUM 23 down -14% at 222€/MWh
