Lower Gas Market on H1 Demand in Europe and Asia: IEA

NATURAL GAS

The gas market moderated down significantly in H1 2023, despite tighter supply conditions, primarily due to lower gas demand in key import markets both in Europe and Asia according to IEA.

  • Gas consumption in Europe dropped by over 30bcm in H1 2023, while storage injections were down by close to 10bcm in Q2 compared to the same period last year.
  • China's gas demand has returned to double-digit growth partly due to very weak hydro performance, but this growth was almost entirely offset by the demand reductions in Japan and Korea.
  • Japan's gas demand fell by over 10% in Jan to May 2023 due to a mild winter and returning nuclear availability as output rose by close to 50% in H1.
