Macron Says Ground Being Prepared For Fisheries Compromise In Brexit Talks

Wires reporting that according to French fisheries sources, French President Emmanuel Macron is laying the ground for compromises to be made on the subject of fisheries in UK-EU FTA talks.

  • Supposedly the French gov't has told the country's fishing sector that the catch it obtains from UK waters would be smaller from 2021 onwards.
  • Fisheries has been a major sticking point in negotiations. Unlike LPF and horizontal governance, fisheries carries a strong emotional connection with sections of the public, both in the UK and EU. The loss of access to UK waters would prove a domestic political issue for Macron unlike most other areas of FTA talks with the UK.
