Macron Unveils EUR30bn Re-Industrialisation Plan As Election Race Looms

FRANCE

French President Emmanuel Macron has today announced a five-year EUR30bn plan to 're-industrialise' the country, with plans to become a leader in green hydrogen production and intentions to build new smaller nuclear reactors.

  • At a meeting of business leaders, Macron dubbed the plan 'France 2030', and stated that "We must wage the battle of innovation and industrialisation at the same time...We must rebuild a framework to ensure the productive independence of France and Europe,"
  • The announcement comes as the French presidential election campaign begins to heat up ahead of the first-round vote taking place 10 April 2022.
  • Polls show Macron in pole position to win a second term in office. The incumbent looks set to win the first round contest, but well short of an overall majority. At present only centre-right hopeful Xavier Bertrand would offer Macron a significant challenge in a hypothetical second round run-off.
