Majority Leader Schumer: GOP Bill Is A "Hard Right Ransom Note"

US

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has slammed House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's debt limit bill which passed the House yesterday. Democrats have dubbed the GOP bill the 'Default on America Act'.

  • Schumer: "House Republicans passed... a bill which amounts to little more than a hard right ransom note to the American people."
  • "The Default on America Act reads more like a threat, coming directly from the House Freedom Caucus. Either Republicans will force a default on the debt, or they will force steep cuts, highly unpopular with the American people."
  • Schumer: "The Republican DOA does nothing to actually resolve the looming debt crisis and it has no hope of actually becoming law. If anything, the House's actions have made the likelihood of default more likely."
  • Schumer: "If Republicans want to sell this terrible agenda to the American people they should make their case in budget talks and appropriations."
  • Semafor noted this morning that suggestions of ‘budget’ talks may open a window for compromise: “...the path forward does seem to be budget talks that, you know, just might happen to unlock a debt ceiling hike on the side.”
