MALAYSIA: BN Nominates Yaakob For PM, Needs More Support For Majority

Asian polling aggregator @AsiaElects tweet: "The Barisan Nasional alliance (BN, Conservative) have nominated former Deputy PM Ismail Sabri Yaakob (UMNO, Conservative) as their PM candidate with support from BERSATU (Conservative) and PAS (Islamist). He has yet to secure a parliamentary majority as talks continue."

  • The Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU) and the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) - both of which sit within the conservative Perikatan Nasional (PM, National Alliance) group in the Dewan Rakyat (lower house of parliament).
  • Even with the support of all members from the BN and PN alliances, Yaakob would only command the support of 91 deputies, below the 112 required for a majority in the 222-member chamber.
  • King Al-Sultan Abdullah, Malaysia's current monarch, has stated that any new PM candidate should have their majority tested in parliament before taking office.
