MALAYSIA-Fmr PM Muhyiddin Arrested: Anti-Graft Agency

Wires reporting that the Malaysian anti-graft agency has confirmed that former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has been arrested and will face multiple charges in court on Friday 10 March. States that Muhyiddin will be charged 'under laws on anti-money laundering, anti-terrorism financing and proceeds of unlawful activities', as well as 'laws related to the abuse of power'.

  • Muhyiddin had appeared voluntarily at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) HQ for questioning over allegations that building contractors funneled money to his Bersatu Party in exchange for contracts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Muhyiddin served as PM from March 2020 to August 2021, covering a significant portion of the pandemic. Incumbent PM Anwar Ibrahim promised during the November 2022 election campaign (that his Pakatan Harapan coalition won) that he would launch a crackdown on corruption, particularly during the COVID period, if he came to office.
