MALAYSIA: Opposition Cries Foul Amid Arrest Of Bersatu's Muhyiddin

The arrest of Malaysia's former Prime Minister and leader of the main opposition Bersatu party Muhyiddin Yassin is set to spark controversy and may expose the government to accusations of politically motivated action ahead of this year's state elections in Selangor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah and Penang.

  • This has already manifested as Muhyiddin's lieutenant and Official Opposition Leader Hamzah Zainudin said that the Bersatu chief is facing "political persecution," while the ex-Premier denied any wrongdoing.
  • Meanwhile, a senior official of the PAS party (Bersatu's ally from the Perikatan Nasional bloc) accused PM Anwar Ibrahim of pressuring law enforcement agencies to fabricate charges against political opponents.
  • Anwar said last month that the MACC investigation concerns some MYR300mn found in Bersatu party accounts. In the course of the probe, the MACC froze some of Bersatu's bank accounts last month.
