ASIA

Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to unveil his Cabinet line-up within a week, local media outlets report. New ministers may be sworn in and take office before the weekend.

  • The New Straits Times reported that Anwar presented a list of ministers to the King during his first royal audience as head of government yesterday. The aim is to form the new administration before the King departs for an official visit overseas this Saturday.
  • A source told the New Straits Times that "the Cabinet line-up will probably be announced tomorrow (Thursday)" The source also pushed back against the suggestions that UMNO leader Zahid could be appointed Deputy Prime Minister.
  • Anwar had earlier said that he will present a leaner Cabinet with lower salaries, with one Deputy Prime Minister post reserved for Barisan Nasional and one for a party from Borneo. The size of the Cabinet may be reduced to 25 ministers from 31 under the previous administration.
