Malaysia's King To Consult With All BN Lawmakers On PM Appointment Wednesday

ASIA

The King has summoned all 30 Barisan Nasional lawmakers for an audience at 10:30am Wednesday morning, according to a statement from Royal Household Comptroller.

  • "The process is so that the King can make a decision to appoint a Member of Parliament who in His Majesty's wisdom might command the majority of the Dewan Rakyat as provided by Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution," the Istana Negra said.
  • The King met with two main contenders vying to form the next administration but the audience was inconclusive. Speculation was rife that Pakatan Harapan's Anwar could be named interim Premier, but the politician told reporters that the monarch gave leaders more time to secure the support of a simple majority of lawmakers.
  • Despite its disappointing performance in the weekend's general election, Barisan Nasional can play a pivotal role in determining which of the two largest blocs gets to form the next government. The UMNO-led alliance has so far remained on the sidelines, after its senior executives failed to reach agreement on coalition talks.
