Malaysia To Expand Electoral Roll Sunday, UMNO Reportedly Mull Triggering Johor Poll

Malaysia's electoral roll is set to grow by 5.8mn this Sunday, as the Electoral Commission is set to implement Undi18, the government's flagship reform which lowers the voting age and introduces automatic registration of virtually all eligible voters.
  • The reform will take effect with several elections in sight. The Straits Times reported this morning that after a strong showing in the November Melaka poll, UMNO are "keen to trigger another ballot in its birthplace of Johor," citing unnamed party officials.
  • Separately, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has ruled out a snap state election and said his administration will wait for the next general election, which is just a little more than a year away.
