Malaysian Election Commission To Start Its Meeting Around 10:00 Local Time

Malaysia's Election Commission will hold its special meeting today to decide on the timelines for the upcoming general election, as well as the delayed state by-election in Bugaya, Sabah and the elections to Pahang, Perak and Perlis state assemblies, expected to be held concurrently with the federal poll.

  • The Commission will convene for a two-hour meeting around 03:00 BST/10:00 MYT, which will be followed by an announcement from its chairman. The official will reveal the dates for issuing the writ of election, nomination day, early voting day and main polling day.
  • Voters will elect the total of 222 Dewan Rakyat members, with 42 state assembly seats up for grabs in Pahang, 15 in Perlis and 59 in Perak. Latest reports suggested that party leaders are still working on candidate lists.
  • It will be the first general election since the adoption of Automatic Voter Registration and lowering the voting age, which will expand the number of eligible voters to 21.1mn from 14.9mn in the previous poll.
