Maltese Parliamentary Elections Saturday 26 March

Malta will hold parliamentary elections on Saturday with the incumbent Labour party expected to be returned to power.

  • The election is the first with Prime Minister Robert Abela as leader after he replaced predecessor Joseph Muscat following a string of scandals.
  • The Maltese elections are of particular note following scrutiny from the EU over its citizenship scheme which allows non-EU citizens a fast track to EU citizenship.
  • Last year Malta was grey-listed by the global authority on money laundering for the scheme.
  • Earlier this month Malta suspended the sale of passports to Russians and Belarusians following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
  • Results are expected on Sunday.
