Mapisa-Nqakula Granted Bail, S. Africa Holds Linkers Auction

  • President Cyril Ramaphosa said that Mapisa-Nqakula deserves praise for resigning while facing 12 corruption and money laundering charges. The former Speaker was granted bail on Thursday after she urged the court to allow her to stay out of jail pending her trial. In her affidavit she pointed to "chronic failings" of the penitentiary system and described South African prisons as places riddled with violence, overcrowded, and characterised by inadequate sanitation.
  • There has been no loadshedding for 10 days now, which is the longest reprieve since December 15 - January 2. Moneylweb ran a piece arguing that this has been possible due to lower demand over the Easter long weekend, the fact that the coal fleet has been performing better than before, as well as solid performance of renewables.
  • The National Treasury will auction 4.250% 2031, 1.875% 2033 and 2.500% 2046 linkers today.
