Massachusetts Says Rise In Jobless Claims Due To Fraud Attempts

  • Yesterday’s surprise increase in the seasonally adjusted level of initial jobless claims (from 242k to 264k) helped prompt risk-off moves.
  • However, Massachusetts today says that its rise in claims was due to fraud attempts.
  • From the press release, it did indeed see the largest non-seasonally adjusted increase in claims by state last week with +6.4k, on its own accounting for nearly half the total +14.0k (from 220k to 234k).
  • The outright level of claims is also high, with 34.9k last week the second highest state second only to California's 46k despite Massachusetts having a population less than a fifth of California’s.
  • We had noted at the time that nationwide NSA initial claims had poked above typical non-pandemic weeks in a break from prior weeks when it had been tracking more in line at the higher end.
