May 29 Presidential Election Looms With Runoff Most Likely Outcome

COLOMBIA
  • Colombians will go to the polls this Sunday, where leftist candidate, Gustavo Petro, is still the front-runner in the race. With all major polls indicating no candidate will receive the necessary 50% to win, a second-round runoff on June 19 remains the most likely scenario.
  • Former construction entrepreneur Rodolfo Hernadez would defeat leftist Senator Gustavo Petro in a runoff, according to poll by AtlasIntel. Hernandez would beat Petro by 48.2% to 39.8%, the poll found. Petro would beat all the other candidates in a runoff, according to the survey. (BBG)
    • In the first-round vote, Petro leads voting intentions with 40%, Federico Gutierrez had 26.7%, Hernandez had 21.4%, Sergio Fajardo had 8.8%.
  • A separate poll by Guarumo published by El Tiempo newspaper shows gap between Gustavo Petro and Federico Gutierrez within margin of error, in the event of a runoff.
  • Ingrid Betancourt is quitting Colombia’s presidential race and will back Rodolfo Hernandez, Semana magazine said, citing unnamed sources from her Green Oxygen party.
