McCarthy Loses Fourth Consecutive Speaker Vote

US

Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has lost a fourth consecutive vote to become the next speaker of the House of Representatives.

  • With the vote still ongoing in the House, McCarthy has already dropped too many votes to take the Speaker's gavel.
  • GOP rebels have coalesced around Rep Byron Donalds (R-FL) after yesterday's nominee Freedom House Caucus founding member Jim Jordan (R-OH) urged Republicans to vote for McCarthy.
  • The House will shortly undertake a sixth round of voting unless McCarthy attempts to adjourn the House to regroup. Adjourning will require a majority vote and is unlikely to succeed in the face of robust opposition to his nomination.
