McCarthy On Track To Lose 12th Ballot But Rebel Group Sheds Votes

Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has significantly reduced the size of the group of rebel conservatives opposing his bid to become Speaker of the House of Representatives.

  • In the first ballot of the day, McCarthy has peeled away the majority of rebel conservatives who have opposed his nomination in 11 consecutive ballots over three days.
  • McCarthy's opposition will now be comprised of a hardcore group of "never Kevins" who have pledged to stonewall McCarthy for as long as it takes.
  • Pressure on the conservatives to drop their blockade may now be overwhelming and attention will now turn to how the vast packages of concessions dolled out to a small fringe of the party will affect the GOP's ability to lead the House.
