McConnell: America Must Never Default On Its Debt

US

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has expressed confidence that Democrats and Republicans can negotiate a solution to the looming debt limit crisis as the US Treasury Department begins extraordinary measures to avoid a default.

  • McConnell: “The important thing to remember is that America must never default on its debt. It never has, and it never will"
  • McConnell said he believes that debt ceiling negotiations will take place at some point in the first half of 2023 with, "some kind of negotiation with the administration over what are the circumstances or conditions under which the debt ceiling be raised."
  • McConnell added in response to a question from the press: "No, I would not be concerned about a financial crisis."
  • McConnell also said he believes that there must be changes to the process of government funding legislation - a separate issue which has become a talking point for conservative Republican lawmakers: "It's certainly not ideal to have all of the appropriation bills balled up into one big bill. I don't advocate that, but I'm not the majority leader of the Senate anymore."
