Menendez Russia Sanctions Bill To Be Passed This Week

Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and James Risch (R-ID) of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee believe that plans to legislate sanctions on Russia are nearly finalised. Menendez said he expects a deal to be reached this week.


  • The Senate bill would target Russian banks, Russian sovereign debt, and provide more US military support to Ukraine.
  • The main point of disagreement is whether or not to sanction the Nordstream 2 gas pipeline. Republicans believe that immediate sanctions on the pipeline is the best strategy to curb Russian influence in Europe.
  • Today's meeting between President Biden and the emir of Qatar at the White House could give greater clarity to the Nordstream 2 question. Biden is expected to push the Emir to increase gas supply to Europe. A deal with Qatar could mitigate a European gas crisis in the event of war and allow greater leverage over Russia on Nordstream 2.
