Merkel: No Reason To Make Vaccination Mandatory

Speaking at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel states that there is no reason to make COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory, saying that many people still want to get vaccinated.

  • Does say, though, that reaching 85% full vaccination among 18-59 year-olds (the rate expected to offer 'herd immunity' to the wider population) will be difficult.
  • Health Minister Jens Spahn says that "Vaccination is a very individual decision. But every single decision makes a difference for us as a community. The US president Joe Biden has called it a "patriotic duty" to get vaccinated. I think he's right."
