AFP reporting that German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet with US President Joe Biden at the White House on 15 July.
- The trip may signal the start of something of a farewell tour for Merkel, who is stepping down as chancellor at the September federal election after 16 years in office.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also received an invite to the White House in July. Kyiv has requested more military support from Germany in recent weeks, something rebuffed by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas. There is the prospect that Zelensky seeks to encourage Biden to place more pressure on the German gov't to offer more assistance to Ukraine in its efforts to regain control of the Donbass region.
