  • Metsola, from the Maltese Nationalist Party and sitting as part of the Christian democrat European People's Party (EPP) was elected with 458 votes. Her competitiors, Alice Bah Kuhnke from the Swedish Green Party and Sira Rego from the Spanish United Left won 101 and 57 votes respectively.
  • The 43-year old has been seen as a somewhat controversial candidate due to her previously stated socially conservative views on abortion. However, she stated she would fight to protect womens' rights, as well as issuing a rebuttal to populist leaders in the EU, stating that they would not succeed in breaking up the bloc.
