Ministerial Security Meeting Set For 7 January

Kyodo News reporting that the US and Japan have agreed for a joint ministerial security meeting for 7 January 2022.

  • Comes at a time of heightened tensions in east Asia, with China operating increased military flights into Taiwanese airspace.
  • Presuming that the meeting involves US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and/or Secretary of Defense Lloyd Ausin III, it will be their first in-person meeting with the new Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi. Both Blinken and Austin have previously met with Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi.
