Mitsui Has No Plans to Withdraw from Sakhalin-2 LNG

LNG

Mitsui has no plans to withdraw from the Sakhalin-2 LNG project in Russia with LNG exports to Japan experiencing no issues with operations according to senior executive managing officer Toru Matsui at an annual general meeting.

  • "We have decided last year to keep our stake in the Sakhalin-2 after consulting with the Japanese government as the project supplies about 9% of Japan's LNG imports," said Matsui.
  • The company would make an appropriate change if and when the situation changed in compliance with any government sanctions.
  • Mitsui and Mitsubishi retained their 22.5% combined stakes in Sakhalin-2 last year when the ownership was moved to a Russian based operating company. Shell quit Sakhalin-2 and the approval for the sale of their 27.5% stake to Novatek was granted in April.
