MNI BRIEF: Can't Anticipate ECB Decisions Beyond July –De Cos

It is not possible to anticipate the European Central Bank's September policy decision now, especially after recent PMI data surprised to the downside and could signal lower growth, Bank of Spain’s Governor Pablo Hernandez de Cos said on Friday.

The PMIs numbers stress the need for a data dependent approach, noting inflation risks are balanced while growth risks are tilted to the downside, Hernandez de Cos said at an event in Santander.

De Cos added that the ECB still has “some ground to cover” and pointed out that the transmission of monetary tightening could be “higher than had been anticipated in the projections” due to its speed and intensity. The war in Ukraine and the appearance of second round effects are the other two sources of uncertainty, he said.
