Canadian factory sales rose 0.5% in August to a near-record CAD60.3 billion, the federal statistics office said Thursday, climbing 15% from a year earlier on record demand for chemicals and metals. The gain came even as auto-making plunged 8.7% amid the microchip shortage.

Excluding motor vehicles and parts, factory sales rose 1.6% in August. Statistics Canada also boosted its estimates for sales in the prior three months.
