MNI BRIEF: Canada Likely Refreshing BOC Mandate Monday

OTTAWA (MNI)

Canada's Finance Minister and central bank Governor scheduled press events on Monday where it's likely they will announce a refresh of the inflation targeting mandate that's expiring this month, seen mostly sticking to the current 2% target.

The Bank of Canada will release background documents at 10am EST. Chrystia Freeland and Governor Tiff Macklem will speak to reporters in Ottawa at 11am according to a government notice released Friday. The notices didn't specify a topic.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told lawmakers earlier this week an announcement on the mandate was coming soon. MNI sources have said it's unlikely there will be much change from the single mandate of keeping inflation at 2%, and Trudeau this week didn't follow up on earlier comments from Freeland about a wider range of options laid out in public discussions. The BOC and the government have set five-year agreements on its mandate since the 1990s.
