Canada's federal budget slipped into deficit in October, ending what had been a surprising run of surpluses since the fiscal year began in April, the finance department reported Friday.

The deficit was CAD174 million from April to October, still much smaller than the CAD72.3 billion recorded in the same period a year earlier. For just the month of October, the deficit was CAD1.9 billion.

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on Nov. 3 pared the projected deficit for this fiscal year to CAD36 billion from an earlier estimate of CAD53 billion as the economy picked up. Freeland said she was offering restraint to avoid making the central bank's inflation fight more difficult while also spending some of the windfall, a stance some experts reject.
