MNI BRIEF: EU Labour Market Slack Drops In Q3

LONDON (MNI)

The European Union saw a modest pickup in the labour market in Q3, as a relaxation in the Covid-19 restrictions in many countries saw those temporarily out of the workforce returning to jobs, data released by Eurostat Monday showed.

Through Q3, 188.0 million persons were employed in the EU. Seasonally adjusted, the employment rate for people aged 20-64 stood at 72.4%, up by 0.3 pp from 72.1% in Q2. In total, 14.8 million persons were unemployed at the end of Q3.

Seasonally adjusted total labour market slack, consisting in unmet need for work, amounted to 29.4 million persons, or 13.9% of the extended labour force in Q3, slightly down from 14.1% Q2.
