MNI BRIEF: Unilateral UK Action on NIP A Concern - Sefcovic

(MNI) LONDON
(MNI) Brussels

The UK’s plan to take unilateral action to disable the Northern Ireland Protocol was a “serious concern”, EU Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic said Thursday.

Speaking after a call with UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, he said unilateral action was “simply not acceptable” and only joint solutions would work. Sefcovic said that there was “still potential to be explored” in proposals made by the Commission in February to improve the workings of the Protocol, but said no response had yet been made by the UK.

“The EU and the UK are partners facing the same global challenges where upholding the rule of law and living up to international obligations is a necessity. Working side-by-side in a constructive manner is of utmost importance.”
