MNI BRIEF: Average Wages Up In Japan, But Real Pay Slips

TOKYO (MNI)

Average wages in Japan rose 1.1% y/y in April though real wages fell 1.2%, according to preliminary data released on Tuesday by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

Total monthly average cash earnings per regular employee rose 1.7% y/y in April, building on a 2.0% gain in March, (See MNI BRIEF: BOJ's Kuroda: Watching Wage, Longer Inflation Views). Total CPI minus imputed rents rose 3.0% y/y in April after a 1.5% gain in March.

Overtime pay rose 5.9% y/y in April, accelerating from March, due more overtime hours worked. Bonuses and other special pay rose 7.2% y/y in April, for the fourth straight increase.
