MNI BRIEF: Japan H’hold Assets at JPY2,179 Trln End-Sept
MNI (TOKYO) - The balance of financial assets held by Japanese households stood at JPY2,179 trillion at the end of September, up 2.8% y/y and for the 18th straight quarterly rise, preliminary fund circulation data released by the Bank of Japan on Wednesday showed.
But the balance of households’ financial assets at the end of September posted the first quarterly drop in eight quarters.
The balance of cash and deposits held by Japanese households at the end of September stood at JPY1,116 trillion, up 0.3% from a year earlier.
The balance of cash and deposits accounted for 51.2% of the total financial assets, showing Japanese households continued refraining from buying financial assets.
Government bonds and Treasury bills held by the BOJ stood at JPY572 trillion at the end of September, down 0.8% y/y and accounting for 46.7% of total government debt, the single largest holder, down from 46.9% at the end of June.
The balance of government bonds and Treasury bills held by non-Japanese totaled JPY146 trillion at the end of September, down 12.9% y/y, and accounting for 12.0% of total government bonds, down from 12.7% at the end of June.
