MNI BRIEF: Outlook Downgraded As Japan's Jan Confidence Slumps

Japan's consumer confidence index fell in January as all four components worsened from December as Omicron infections increased, prompting the Cabinet Office to lower its assessment for the first downward revision since May 2021, data released by the Cabinet Office on Monday showed.

The index fell to 36.7 in January from 39.1 in December. The latest survey was conducted from Jan. 7-20.The Cabinet Office said that consumer confidence is “marking time.” The previous view was continued recovery.
