MNI BRIEF: Japan Dec Confidence Edges Down As Labor View Drops

Japan's consumer confidence index edged down in December as one of the four components worsened, but the Cabinet Office left its assessment unchanged, data released by the Cabinet Office on Wednesday showed.

The Consumer Confidence Survey index fell to 39.1 in December from 39.2 in November. The latest survey was conducted from December 7 to December 20.

Consumers were more optimistic in overall economic well-being and income conditions but the willingness to buy durable goods buy was unchanged. The Cabinet Office maintained the view “the recovery continued.”

The share of respondents projecting consumer price gains rose to 88.5% in December from 87.6% in November. The share of respondents forecasting lower prices rose to 2.7% in December from November’s 2.5%.
