MNI BRIEF: Japan June Core CPI Up 2.2% On Energy, Food Costs​​​

Japan's June annual core consumer inflation rate rose 2.2% y/y, up from +2.1% in May, for the highest level since March 2015, data the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication released Friday showed.

The June increase came on the back of higher food and energy prices. The underlying inflation rate measured by the core-core CPI (excluding fresh food and energy) rose 1.0% y/y in June, also up from May.

The positive contribution from energy items slowed to 1.23 pp in June from 1.26 pp in May but the positive contribution from food rose to 0.72 pp in June from 0.6 pp in May, (See: MNI STATE OF PLAY: BOJ's Easy Views Intact Despite Higher CPI).
