MNI BRIEF: Shunichi Suzuki Named Finance Minister By Kishida

(MNI) Tokyo
TOKYO (MNI)

Former Olympics and environment minister Shunichi Suzuki will be appointed as Japan's next finance minister, local news reports said on Friday, replacing his brother-in-law and finance stalwart Taro Aso as Liberal Democratic Party gets set to place Fumio Kishida as prime minister next week.

Suzuki, 68, is the eldest son of former Prime Minister Zenko Suzuki, will play a key role in compiling the budget and formulating economic stimulus measures. Aso, 81, has held the finance ministry job for nearly nine years, longer than anyone.

Kishida will be elected Japan's 100th prime minister in an extraordinary parliamentary session on Monday and he will launch his cabinet and then he is expected to dissolve the lower house of the Diet, or parliament, around mid-October for an election sometime in early November.
