MNI BRIEF: Japan Heading to Election, say Local Reports

MNI (Sydney)
TOKYO (MNI)

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is expected to dissolve the lower house in September for a general election after compiling economic stimulus packages to support workers hit by the coronavirus pandemic, local newspapers reported on Wednesday.

The approval rating of Prime Minister Suga's government has fallen recently as people have been dissatisfied with the pandemic response and the extended state of emergency, according to recent surveys.

The ruling coalition currently holds 306 of 465 seats in the more powerful of parliament's two chambers.
