MNI BRIEF: Japan September Retail Sales Post 2nd Straight Drop

TOKYO (MNI)

Japan's retail sales fell 0.6% y/y in September for the second straight y/y drop in the wake of lower spending for motor vehicles,, general merchandise and machinery and equipment, preliminary data released Thursday by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) showed.

METI left its assessment unchanged that that retail sales "are flattening."

Spending for fuel rose 16.4% on higher petrol prices. Retail sales rose 2.6% m/m in September for the first rise in two months following a revised -4.0% in August.
