MNI BRIEF: Japan September Sentiment Rebounds, Outlook Surges

Japan's sentiment index posted the first rise in two months as major components improved from the previous month and the outlook index for two to three months ahead rebounded sharply, the Economy Watchers report released by the Cabinet Office Friday showed.

The Economy Watchers sentiment index rose a seasonally adjusted 7.4 points to 42.1 in September from 34.7 in August.

An official at the Cabinet Office told reporters that a drop in Coviod-19 infections and a solid vaccine rollout were behind the rise in the current index. The outlook index for two to three months ahead rose 12.9 points to 56.6 from 43.7 in August, for the first rise in three months. September's 56.6 is the highest level since October 2013 when the index stood at 57.0.

The survey was conducted by the Cabinet Office between September 25 and September 30 when the government decided to lift the state of emergency and targeted roughly 2,000 people, including store managers and taxi drivers.
