Taiwan's exports fell 0.5% y/y in October, the second month of contraction, but were a marked improvement on the 5.3% y/y fall reported in September, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday.

Driving the fall were decreases in base metals and plastics, which dropped 27.6% and 28.7% respectively. The declines were partially offset by a 15.9% increase in electronic parts leaving Taiwan.

Imports rose by 8.2% y/y as mineral products and machinery increased 42.0% and 20.7% respectively.

The trade balance dropped to USD2.99 billion from last month’s USD5.02 billion.
