MNI BRIEF: UK June Retail Sales Rise Modestly After MAY Fall

Retail sales rose by a meagre 0.5% in June, recovering only a small portion of the unexpectedly-large 1.3% decline in May (upwardly revised from the initially-reported 1.4% fall. The gain outperforms the 0.1% fall forecast by City analysts.

Food sales provided the biggest boost to sales volumes, rising by 4.2%, with retailers attributing the gain to the start of the European football championships. After May's slight gain, sales are up by 9.5% over pre-pandemic levels. Fuel sales rose by 2.3% in May, but remain 2.1% below pre-pandemic levels.
