MNI BRIEF: UK Consumers More Pessimistic in Jan: GfK

MNI (London)
LONDON (MNI)

UK consumer confidence eased 2 points in January to -28, down from -26 recorded in December. January's decline was led by a sharp drop in household's opinion of the general economic situation in the next 12 months, falling by 9 points to -44. Four out of six measures declined in comparison to December. Intentions to make major purchases declined 2 points to -24, while the savings index ticked up one point to 18.

Consumer's assessment of their personal financial situation over the next 12 months eased 1 point, while their opinion of their financial situation over last 12 months gained 1 point. "The real key is how we view our personal financial situation for the next 12 months. That's just as well because, amid widespread uncertainty over jobs and livelihoods, any decline in how we see our personal finances in the year to come would be a clear warning that the economic outlook will not improve any time soon." says Joe Staton, GfK's Client Strategy Director.
