MNI BRIEF: UK Feb Sales Higher, Distortions Cloud Data: BRC

igh: BRC
(MNI) London

UK same-store sales rose by a 2.7% in the year to February, a performance flattered by weakness in February 2021, when many non-essential shops were shuttered, a British Retail Consortium survey published Tuesday shows. The February outcome is well below the 12-month-average growth rate of 8.5%.

The BRC data are measured by value, rather than volume, so the sharp rise in prices may also distort the February data, as shop prices jumped by a decade-high 1.8% in February, while the official consumer price index topped 5% in January.

Despite the strength in the headline number, the outlook is bleaker, with BRC head Helen Dickenson saying current demand is "unlikely to be sustained … With households facing lower disposable income, discretionary spend will be one of the first things to feel the squeeze.”
