MNI BRIEF: UK GDP Flat In April After Strong Q1 - ONS
ONS says GDP growth was 0.0% in April, in line with analysts and Bank of England, helped by the service sector.
UK GDP was flat in April 2024, the Office for National Statistics said Wednesday, following growth of 0.4% in March 2024 and is now is estimated to have grown by 0.7% in the last three months compared with the three months to January.
The outcome was in line with market expectations and will have no surprises for Bank of England policymakers ahead of the June 20 rate decision. (see MNI BOE WATCH: Holds In May, Takes Another Step Towards Cut)
According to the ONS, services output grew by 0.2%, its fourth consecutive monthly growth, and by 0.9% in the three months to April. Production output fell by 0.9% following growth of 0.2% in March 2024. Construction output fell by 1.4% in April 2024, its third consecutive monthly fall, and fell by 2.2% in the three months to April 2024.
